In addition to the PRAXIS test, Virginia uses the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment® (VCLA™) to evaluate educators’ communication and literacy skills, and the Virginia Reading Assessment® (VRA®) to measure effective reading instruction. The VCLA consists of a reading and a writing subtest. The VRA is offered for both Elementary and Special Education teachers, and measures five key components of effective reading education—phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.
